Make Magazine published a short report of the panel taking place at the Hardware Innovation Workshop, yesterday in New York City. Massimo Banzi and Jason Kridner, co-founder of BeagleBoard, were on the stage talking about the evolution of microcontrollers:

Makers love to develop on their favorite microcontrollers. The creators behind two of the most popular took boards the stage at the New York Hardware Innovation Workshop (HIW) in a panel moderated by MAKE’s own Matt Richardson. Although makers might like to argue about which is the best platform, there was plenty of common ground for these two panelists.

Massimo Banzi, Co-Founder of the Arduino Project, began the session with a short discussion on how and why Arduino got started.

“Every time you design a system to do everything, you end up with a system designed to do nothing,” Massimo says. “The challenge is to build a platform that solves a simple problem for a specific group of people: beginners for example.”

Last weekend at Fondazione Achille Castiglioni Massimo Banzi held a workshop called “Arduino and the light” where participants learned the basics of Arduino and created an interactive lamp digitally manufactured and designed by Habits Studio.

The lamp was developed to be easily assembled the necessity of any technical notion: a single sheet of wood includes all the pieces to be mounted in interlocking, avoiding the use of glues.

All the files to produce the laser-cut lamp will be released with an open-source license and will be downloadable from Habit’s website.

Even without any knowledge of electronics, participants  learnt and practiced how to add interaction to the lamp using Tinkerkit, a collection of different sensors and actuators to make prototyping much easier as you can directly hook them up to the Arduino.

Se avete avuto l’occasione di visitarla, concorderete che la Fondazione Achille Castiglioni sia uno dei luoghi più magici di Milano, un luogo vivo, brulicante e allegro dove si respira l’amore per il design, per il progetto e per le persone.

Il 15 e 16 giugno prossimi in una delle stanze della sede della fondazione in Piazza Castello 27 a Milano, Massimo Banzi terrà un workshop di base intitolato “Arduino e la luce”, portando 15 partecipanti alla realizzazione di una lampada interattiva fabbricata digitalmente a partire da un design di studio Habits.

Dopo l’introduzione alle potenzialità di Arduino e ai fondamenti dell’interattività, Massimo guiderà i partecipanti attraverso esercizi guidati alla scoperta dell’abc di Arduino e di alcuni sensori. Nel resto del weekend Massimo lavorerà con gli studenti per rendere interattive le lampade e ogni partecipante porterà a casa la propria creazione al termine del corso.

Il workshop si svolge nell’ambito della mostra dedicata alla lampada Gibigiana disegnata da Achille Castiglioni presentata con bozzetti e prototipi proposti in una nuova chiave sperimentale. Il ricavato del workshop andrà alla Fondazione Achille Castiglioni.

Il corso è dedicato a principianti; non è necessaria alcuna conoscenza di elettronica e di programmazione. È richiesto a ogni partecipante di portare il proprio laptop con sistema operativo Windows, Mac (10.5 o superiore) o Linux. Su richiesta, sarà possibile pranzare in studio Castiglioni (a un costo di 20 euro per il sabato e la domenica).

Experimenting on light and interaction with Massimo Banzi

If you had the chance to visit it, you’d agree that Fondazione Achille Castiglioni is one of the most charming site of Milan, a lively and inspiring place, where you can breathe the love for design and for the people.

On the 15^th and 16^th of June Massimo Banzi will hold a two-day workshop (in italian) titled “Arduino e la luce” hosted in the rooms of the foundation in Piazza Castello 27 in Milan, bringing 15 participants into creating an interactive digitally-fabricated lamp, designed by Habits studio.

After introducing Arduino and the basics of interactivity, Massimo will guide participants into exploring the sensors and how to make their lamp interactive. Each of them will work on one lamp and is going to bring home the final result at the end of the second day.

The workshop is organized as part of the exhibition dedicated to the Gibigiana lamp, designed by Achille Castiglioni and presented in a new experimental version with sketches and prototypes. All proceeds from this workshop will go to Fondazione Achille Castiglioni.

The workshop will be in italian language and open to beginners, without any knowledge of electronics or programming.

After  participating to Codemotion Rome last month, from the 9th of  May we’ll be spending a couple of days at Codemotion Berlin,  an innovative tech event engaging developers of all languages and technologies.

We’re having an Arduino wearables workshop organized together with Kobakant duo (Mika Satomi and Hannah Perner-Wilson) and focused on the use of Lilypad.

In these 8 hours workshop we’ll explore how computing can be made wearable using the Arduino Lilypad and a selection of conductive materials to make textile sensors and sew electrical connections.

In order to quickly prototype interactive wearables within the workshop, we’ll provide a selection of open source lasercut felt designs that can readily be assembled to garments and accessories. The textiles sensors and fabric circuits can be stitched into felt and powered by battery to make final stand-alone objects.

The cool thing is that no previous experience in programming or sewing is required to participate, so don’t be shy! Check the details and the earlybird offer on Codemotion website!

The next day, Massimo Banzi, thanx to Maker Faire Rome, is opening the Conference with a keynote speech titled: “People over megahertz”.

Il prossimo weekend a Milano è il momento dell’Arduino Tour, una serie di tappe iniziate nel 2012 per portare in giro per l’Italia il  team  di Officine Arduino e coinvolgendo designer, artiste, appassionati e smanettoni in una full immersion sul nostro microprocessore preferito.

In realtà il workshop di questo tour che avverrà proprio sabato e domenica prossimi a Milano (23/24 febbraio – Iscriviti qui), non ha come protagonista un semplice Arduino. Infatti i partecipanti avranno tra le mani e poi si porteranno a casa il nuovo Starter Kit, recentemente recensito su Domusweb (grazie ad Antonio Scarponi!) e di cui potete vedere qualche foto qui:

L’aspetto interessante di questa due giorni è di introdurre alle gioie di Arduino assoluti principianti: chiunque é benvenuto a partecipare al workshop perchè non è richiesta alcuna precedente conscenza di programmazione o di elettronica. E nonostante la loro pazienza e passione nell’accompagnarvi nei vostri primi passi, non rimpiangerete i due docenti del corso quando tornerete a casa perchè il Kit è corredato da un libro di tutorial a prova di absolute beginner e online sono disponibili  una serie di video tutorial in cui Massimo Banzi in persona vi spiega come portare a termine la maggior parte dei progetti raccontati nel volume.

Se abitate a Milano e dintorni, avete voglia di capire in prima persona cosa significa creare progetti interattivi e toccare con mano l’ebbrezza di far blinkare un LED, prenotate uno degli ultimi posti rimasti!

This two days workshop will cover the making & fine-tuning of the latest Prusa I3 with Prusa nozzle AND Ranellucci’s how-to slic3r lesson on Sunday.

If you ever want to jump on the reprap world, this may be the best opportunity. If you don’t feel like buying the printer but just want to follow the workshop taking notes & make questions, we do also offer a spectator admittance.

Al periodico appuntamento con l’elettronica amatoriale presso Modena Fiere, che oggi e domani (19-20 Gennaio) ospita Expo Elettronica, i makers e gli hobbysti emiliano-romagnoli non possono rimanere delusi per il calibro degli ospiti in programma. Officine Arduino, assieme ai ragazzi del FabLab di Reggio Emilia, offrono un’occasione unica per confrontarsi con il mondo dei makers e con la prototipazione DIY, grazie a numerose varianti di stampanti 3D esposte e funzionanti, assieme alla possibilità di provare e “toccare con mano” alcune delle novità più interessanti del mondo Arduino, come l’Arduino DUE.

Alcune delle novità più interessanti riguardano i prossimi eventi in programma, fra cui troviamo l’importante “Makre Faire – The European Edition”, che verrà ospitata per la prima volta in Italia nei giorni 3-6 Ottobre 2013 a Roma e che vedrà coinvolta l’intera comunità di makers provenienti da tutta Europa. Fra gli eventi in programma vi saranno conferenze, workshop hands-on e numerosi speech, in aggiunta alla fiera “vera e propria” che si terrà nel week-end.

Per partecipare come espositori, a partire dal 18 Febbraio si aprirà una “Call for makers” alla quale chiunque sia interessato potrà inviare la propria candidatura e i propri progetti, che verranno accuratamente selezionati per costituire il programma delle numerose esposizioni previste.
